What’s the closest thing to ice cream you can have for breakfast?

Smoothie bowls!

Last year we visited Bay Bowls in Brunswick, Maine where we met Sal and Soraria Matari. They recently opened a second location in Portland at The Black Box shipping containers on Washington Ave. The Yelp Elite Squad celebrated our friend’s new space during a blisteringly warm spring week…

I had already chosen the Rio Bowl by looking at the website. Who doesn’t love the mango and strawberry combo (daiquiris, anyone)? …I had to skip a meeting, so I sat outside and Sal brought the overflowing bowl to my sunny yellow table. The weather was warm, the bowl refreshing and the encounter short. I loved the partially frozen fruit – like ice cream, but healthy – and the fruit combo was perfect. I loved the layered soft granola for added texture and interest…I had a wonderful chat with Sal, one of the owners, about a lot of things under the sun. Food, drink, travel and more. I felt very welcome and loved the personal touch.

Many options exist for freshly made smoothies and bowls. I opted for the FOMO Bowl, which is only listed on the Bay Bowls website. Composed of: acai, pitaya, granola (made in Maine), banana, pineapple, mango, strawberries, blueberries, cocoa nibs, coconut flakes, chia seeds, honey, PB and a drizzle of nutella. WOW this is absolutely the kitchen sink in every way!!! The bowl was incredibly fresh and flavorful, with great textural elements. No guilty eating with this nutritious flavor bomb.
